Gayford and Hockney, A History of Pictures

In this Apollo podcast special, Thomas Marks talks to the writer and critic Martin Gayford about his long and colourful experience of interviewing some of the world’s most illustrious artists. Gayford remembers conversations with Lucian Freud, Ellsworth Kelly, Balthus, Patrick Heron, Tracey Emin and others, and discusses the role of the interviewer and of the artist interview more generally. This podcast coincides with the publication of A History of Pictures: From the Cave to the Computer Screen (Thames & Hudson), co-authored by Martin Gayford and David Hockney, and structured as a series of dialogues between artist and critic: the podcast concludes with Gayford’s reflections on his enduring conversations with the artist.
