This week’s Apollo Art Diary highlights new museums that are scheduled to open later this year.

The new flagship museum of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is opening in Los Angeles this autumn. Housed in a 1930s department store, renovated by Renzo Piano to include some 50,000 square feet of galleries, plus movie theatres and event spaces, the museum will explore the history of cinema. Its collections range from the blockbuster – models for films such as Alien and Jaws – to the recherché, with extensive holdings of pre-cinematic devices such as magic lanterns and peep-show boxes. The inaugural temporary exhibition, opening with the museum in 30 September, will focus on Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki. Find out more from the Academy Museum’s website.
