Design and Aspiration

Britain in the Fifties explores the history of post-war design through the experiences of the average British consumer. The exhibition examines the crucial role of design in shaping the Brave New World of the post-war period and the effect on everyday life of the growing wealth of Fifties Britain. This period dominated by the recovery from austerity and growing consumerism, which is explored in the exhibition through the design experience of an average young British couple, the domestic interior and the social and cultural landscape of this fascinating time.
