The Munich Paintings and their Provenance
In Austria, Rudolf von Alt (1812–1905) is one of the best-known 19th century artists. In his early days as a pupil of his father Jakob, Von Alt developed a specialisation in landscapes and cityscapes – ‘vedute’ – a genre to which he would remain indebted over the course of his nearly eighty-year career. Outside of Austria, the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung Munich holds the most important collection of Von Alt’s work. Unique in its scope of work from his youth, later life, and sketches, the collection is all the more significant because it originates in large part from the artist’s daughter.
