In this study of the life and career of Leonard Rosoman (1913–2012), Tanya Harrod draws on his extensive archives to explore the artist and his world.
Rosoman was born in London and studied art at Newcastle and in London. The range of his work was remarkable, beginning with his emergence as an original artist while serving with the Auxiliary Fire Service during the Blitz and as an Official War Artist in the Far East. He was a gifted illustrator, forming close friendships with writers from William Samson to John Osborne.
Rosoman was an exquisite colourist, an elegant draughtsman, and a master of ingenious perspective. Harrod’s biography of one of the great chroniclers of what W.H. Auden identified as ‘The Age of Anxiety’, takes the reader into unexpected areas of visual, literary and social history.
