21 November 2014

Apollo offers you the chance to win a superb free book

Simply answer the question below and you could win one of the finest art history books.

For our last competition prize we offered Rembrandt’s House: Exploring the World of the Great Master (Tauris Parke, £11.99).

We asked: Rembrandt lived in Amsterdam for the majority of his career. But in which city was he born?

Answer: Leiden

Congratulations to Sandra Rennie, winner of this competition, drawn at random from the hundreds of correct answers we received.

This week’s competition prize is Beyond the Battlefield: Women Artists of the Two World Wars, by Catherine Speck (Reaktion Books, £30).

Beyond-the-Battlefield-resizedIn 2012, ‘Women War Artists’ at London’s Imperial War Museum focused public attention on long-overlooked images created by women during the conflicts of the last century. Catherine Speck’s book is similarly welcome, exploring not only the art of the home front and work by familiar names such as Lee Miller, but also powerful art made by women working near the front lines – as nurses or ambulance drivers, for instance.

For your chance to win simply answer the following question and submit your details here before midday on 5 December 2014

Which English artist painted Ruby Loftus screwing a Breech-ring in 1943?

This competition closes at midday on 5 December 2014
