Cézanne family and Kunstmuseum Bern reach agreement over Gurlitt hoard painting | The descendants of Paul Cézanne have reached an agreement with the Kunstmuseum Bern over the artist’s painting La Montagne Sainte-Victoire, one of more than 1,500 works discovered in the possession of Cornelius Gurlitt – who inherited the collection from his father and dealer of Nazi-looted art Hildebrand Gurlitt – in 2012. According to the Art Newspaper, the painting will remain in the collection of the Swiss museum, acknowledged by the family as the rightful owner. In return, the Kunstmuseum Bern has agreed to loan the work to Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence on an annual basis.
Report recommends removing statue of Jefferson Davis in Richmond | The Guardian reports that a commission investigating US Civil War monuments in Richmond, Virginia has recommended the removal of a statue of Confederate president Jefferson Davis. Located alongside four other Confederate statues on the city’s Monument Avenue, the statue was described in the report as ‘the most unabashedly Lost Cause in its design and sentiment’. The report did not call for the four other monuments to be removed, although it did recommend the introduction of contextual signs at the sites. Though these recommendations are not legally binding, the mayor’s office has stated that it agrees with the report’s conclusion that ‘something needs to change’.
Myrna Ayad steps down as director of Art Dubai | Art Dubai director Myrna Ayad is stepping down after two years at the fair, reports The National. Ayad, who was previously editor of Canvas magazine, is departing her role to start a cultural strategy consultancy that will encompass publishing, brand strategy, developing collections and organising events. The fair has yet to announce a new director.
