Mariana Castillo Deball: Roman Rubbish

12 August 2022

Inspired by the 14,000 Roman artefacts which were discovered during a series of archaeological digs at Bloomberg’s European headquarters between 2012–14, this commissioned installation by the Mexican artist Mariana Castillo Deball is on show at the London Mithraeum, Bloomberg SPACE until 14 January 2023. Titled Roman Rubbish (2022), the work comprises towering pillars of ceramics and a wax wall inscribed with writing to evoke the appearance of an ancient Roman writing tablet. Following a fictional narrative inspired by the archaeological findings, Roman Rubbish explores the story behind the items found on site such ceramic vessels, combs and amulets. The artist has created oversized replicas of many of these artefacts and placed them within pockets sewn into a fabric curtain. Find out more on the London Mithraeum Bloomberg SPACE’s website.
