Swedish-born Nina Canell makes sculpture and installation art that is concerned with its own materiality, exploring qualities such as fragility or viscosity. Preferring to work with common objects such as old beams, pipes, cables or seeds, Canell leaves much of her work to chance, something she achieves by animating her art with elements such as heat or electricity. Canell’s work has been exhibited at the ICA, London, Camden Arts Centre, London, BALTIC, Gateshead, and more recently at K11, Hong Kong, the Artist’s Institute, New York and Guggenheim Bilbao. A major exhibition of Canell’s new and recent work, entitled ‘Energy Budget’, has just closed at S.M.A.K., Ghent. She frequently works in collaboration with Robin Watkins.
