Reclining Lion,
(c. 1770–90), Claude Michel, called Clodion
Traditionally used for making maquettes for larger works, terracotta became a medium for sculpture in its own right and was much prized in the 18th century for its ability to reveal the artist’s inspiration and touch. Indeed, Clodion left the marks of his modelling tools clearly visible in the clay. This recently discovered terracotta demonstrates the sculptor’s mastery of this material, as well as an understanding of the anatomy of this great beast.
