Discovered in 2014, the Galloway Hoard of more than 100 Viking-era jewellery, ingots, vessels and other objects, is among the richest of its kind. The hoard was buried towards the start of 10th century in Dumfries and Galloway, before lying undisturbed for more than a millennia; as such, it is a time capsule of an important moment in British history, when the distinct political entities of England, Scotland and Ireland were beginning to form. After detailed conservation and research, the hoard now goes on public display for the first time, at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, from 29 May–12 September.
