Your chance to own Rod Stewart’s sofa!

17 August 2018

Introducing Rakewell, Apollo’s wandering eye on the art world. Look out for regular posts taking a rakish perspective on art and museum stories.

Rod Stewart is having the Rock’n’Roll equivalent of an attic sale – and he’s planning to offload a whole lot more than handbags and gladrags. In a sale on 11 September, the former Faces frontman will flog 60 lots through the Essex-based auctioneers Sworders.

Instead, the items up for grabs consist of a truckload of covetable antique furniture, from a pair of gilt bronze-mounted side tables to a Louis XV-style sofa and a teak lounge chair complete with a faux leopard print cushion. How very Rod.

In other news…

Reality TV star Khloé Kardashian has been left red faced after failing to recognise a work by Jeff Koons at her mother’s house. ‘You need to go to, like, an art class,’ Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner told her daughter. ‘You can’t “art shame” people just because they know less than you’, Khloe retorted.

The V&A’s latest commercial partnership is pants – literally. The museum has joined forces with the lingerie brand Coco de Mer to produce a range of undergarments adorned with images from its collections. According to Coco de Mer, the fruits of the collaboration ‘[translate] intricate detailing and iridescent surfaces on to glamorous silhouettes’.

Finally, Emma Coleman, Programmes Manager at the Art Fund, has had a revelation…
