Scenes of the Passion of Christ
(c. 1280–1300), Probably Paris

The left wing of this diptych is in the Musée du Louvre. Here we see, from bottom to top, the Mockery of Christ and Christ before Pilate, the Crucifixion and the Deposition, the Holy Women at the Tomb, and Christ in Limbo freeing Adam and Eve from the Leviathan. The deeply carved registers of this private devotional piece are divided by a frieze of roses, while the figures are supple and powerfully modelled, yet retain a certain simplicity.

Selected by Susan Moore.
