Drawings from the Helen Guiterman Bequest
David Roberts (1796–1864) was born in Stockbridge, Edinburgh, the son of a cobbler. He began his career as house painter, before finding success as a theatrical scene painter. In the mid 1820s Roberts began to travel extensively, initially in France, Belgium and Spain and later in the Middle East, making sketches that became the basis for his highly successful print publications, still celebrated today.
