As the Kunstmuseum Basel is closed due to building work in 2015, the Schaulager has taken the opportunity to mount the first major exhibition of its collections in more than 30 years, focusing in particular on the substantial number of new works acquired in the past two decades under the Foundation’s third president, Maja Oeri. The collection comprises paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs and videos from classic modernism to present-day art. Over an area of more than 4,300 m2, the exhibition at the Schaulager illustrates the decades of discipline and rigour invested in building the collection of the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation, its focus and priorities, and the use of often unorthodox decisions to set the path for the collection’s future development.
