Three Views: The Complete Printed Works; Last Acrylic Works On Paper; And Drawings For Poets

Following an exhibition of drawings by Philip Guston (1913–80) at the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in 2007/2008, the Pinakothek der Moderne is dedicating another exhibition to this important artist, bringing together his entire printed work with the near-complete series of acrylic paintings on paper Guston made shortly before his death. In the exhibition, Guston’s complete repertoire confronts the objects heralding his late return to representation at the beginning of the seventies. The result is a type of visual autobiography, illustrated by simple everyday objects: clocks, shoes, books, cigarettes, ashtrays, and occasionally his beloved sandwiches and cherries. Through his characteristic, sensitive use of lithographic crayon or paintbrush, Guston’s ironic eye and cautious hand release these mundane objects from their private,
intimate world and give them a unique life of their own.
