Yto Barrada has been employing photography, video, installation and sculpture to reflect on the experience of a globalized world. Tangiers, where she grew up, is often used by the artist to confront an image of exoticism to a vision that is starkly different from that offered by tour operators. In her work, Tangier is a pretext and a laboratory for a critical discussion of urban planning notions such as increasing urban homogenization – and its consequences on social life – and the gradual disappearance of public space. Barrada has photographed and filmed several examples of public and private gardens, paying keen attention to the way in which botany reflects the migration of ideas, people and, of course, plant species. The spaces of the Serralves Villa, their rich history and their privileged relationship with the gardens, are an ideal environment for the artist to create yet another powerful exhibition.
