Melissa Chiu

Melissa Chiu is the director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. From 2004–14, she was the director of the Asia Society in New York, where she had previously been curator for contemporary Asian and Asian American Art (2001–04), and where she launched a contemporary art collection and commissioned groundbreaking international loan exhibitions devoted to modern art. From 1996–2001, Chiu was the founding director of the Asia-Australia Arts Centre in Sydney, and from 1993–96 was the curator for the University of Western Sydney Collection at the University of Western Sydney. She holds a PhD from the College of Fine Arts at University of New South Wales and has authored and edited numerous books and catalogues, including Contemporary Art in Asia: A Critical Reader (MIT Press, 2011).
