Nana Oforiatta-Ayim

7 September 2017

39 | Founder and Director, ANO, Accra, Ghana

It is a mark of Nana Oforiatta-Ayim’s ambition that she has created the Cultural Encyclopaedia Project, which aims to map and archive historical and contemporary culture across Africa in 54 volumes (one for every country in Africa). Oforiatta-Ayim first envisaged the project, which was launched three years ago, as early as 2009, when she was researching for her PhD on African languages and cultures at SOAS, University of London. The writer, film-maker and art historian has long been committed to changing perceptions of African culture, having set up the ANO Institution of Contemporary Arts in Accra in 2002. Her first novel, The god child, will be published in 2018.
