Part 1: Japan

Inspired by Daisuke Miyao’s book The Aesthetics of Shadow: Lighting and Japanese Cinema, this exhibition explores how Japanese filmmakers have harnessed the cinematic potential of lighting in their art. The exhibition, which draws particular attention to collaborations between east and west, and the ways in which Hollywood methods were adapted for new genres and audiences in Japan, will be accompanied by a programme of film screenings and events.
