Antecedents and Influences

This intimate exhibition brings together the kinds of works of art, both ancient and modern, that Monster Roster artists studied and appreciated.Drawn primarily from the Smart Museum’s collection, it includes classical and medieval sculpture; the traditional arts of Africa, Oceania, and Pre-Columbian Americas; and works of art in various media by the German Expressionists and the modern master Jean Dubuffet.
