German artist Thomas Demand creates models out of cardboard and paper before photographing and destroying them. Pacific Sun is inspired by footage that he found on YouTube of a cruise ship weathering a storm. Demand’s photographs are disconcertingly realistic, yet not quite real: they deliberately reveal how ephemeral images have come to stand in for actual experience in our daily lives.
