Heecheon Kim

22 September 2022

Seoul

Filmmaker Heecheon Kim is interested in the forms of distortion that are intrinsic to new technologies, from VR and face swap applications to GPS. Every Smooth Thing through Mesher, which premiered at the Gwangju Biennale in 2018, envisioned a scenario in which the artificial reality presented by the Pokémon Go game became indistinguishable from the real world – a work that is typical of the ways in which Kim probes at consciousness, perception and the threats posed to them as technologies become increasingly central to our lives. ‘I think the screens are disappearing and the world itself is becoming a screen,’ he has said. Solo displays of his work have been held at Art Sonje Center, Seoul (2019), Doosan Art Center in New York and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco (both 2018); his work has also been included in group shows at BB&M in Seoul, the Julia Stoschek Collection in Düsseldorf (both 2022) and the Serpentine, London (2020), among many others, and is held by numerous institutions include the Korean National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.
