Tell it with Pride: The Shaw Memorial

National Gallery of Art (Washington)

NOW CLOSED

‘At its unveiling in 1897, Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ bas-relief memorial to Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts Infantry was hailed by reviewers as one of the most significant works of plastic art ever to have been produced in the United States. The sculpture commemorated the services and sacrifices rendered by one of the first African American regiments to fight for the Union during the American Civil War.’ (Kristen Treen – read the full review)
